Project History

Growcer is a startup offering hydroponic container farms that enable portable year-roundgrowing in all climates.‍

Their CEO, Corey Ellis, and COO, Alida Burke, approached Unicorn Labs in 2019 to educatemanagement on how to lead their growing team through change and improve team dynamics.Prior to working with Unicorn Labs, Growcer's management team did not understand conflictmanagement principles.

Growcer did not have a culture of feedback, which caused pent up resentment and conflictamongst team members. As a result, employee engagement was low—especially from thosewith reserved personalities who felt silenced by dominant personalities on the team.

Guided by the Unicorn Labs principles, Growcer’s management team rebuilt their workplaceculture, gotten employee buy-in, and learned how to become more inclusive leaders whoempower people of all backgrounds and personalities on their team. Now, they have management systems and processes in place to train future managers andprovide ongoing support to their team. Growcer’s managers continue to do one-on-one

Impact of The Unicorn Leadership Model

Growcer's engagement rate increased in all of the measured categories from 2019 to 2020. Allemployees were required to take an employee engagement survey before Growcer’s managersstarted the program and then again one year to measure its impact.

Challenge

With the success and growth of our business came the expansion of our team. But with teamexpansion came a shift in team dynamics we weren’t ready for. Many of our managers were newor inexperienced and had never led people before. Their lack of leadership skills prevented themfrom effectively delegating and managing people with different personalities, ages, andstrengths and weaknesses effectively.

Action

The Unicorn Leadership Model gave us a system and strategy for training managers. It wasunfair of us to promote people from employee to manager and expect them to know how tolead. They needed the tools to become effective leaders who guide employees in their careerdevelopment journey.‍

The Unicorn Leadership Model educated our managers on conflict management andcommunication, and aligned our team on management processes that legitimized our businessinternally.‍

The training also helped our managers improve their emotional intelligence, allowing them toanticipate problems and coach their team members through challenges instead of neglectingthem or attempting to solve their problems for them. This management skill has had a compounding effect on elevating the leadership capacity of ourentire team across all levels of the organization.

Result

You know the saying, “You don’t know what you don’t know”? Well, the Unicorn LeadershipModel helped us identify and overcome leadership gaps that would have taken us a lot of trialand error to solve on our own, saving us time and turnover costs in the process.‍

This program has aligned our team culture in a way where everyone on the team is empoweredto make decisions and own their development in their roles.‍Since working with Unicorn Labs, we have doubled the size of our team and have managed toretain all the employees who were involved in the conflict that caused us to invest in this trainingin the first place.‍
